House Chairman News:

The Queens are back up and running with a change that due to the game coming pre-packed the employees and any Officers of the Post can now pick their own numbers, etc. just like any other member. Remember if you don’t play the pot will not build up. I understand that some members are not playing because they feel some of the jack pot from the last game should have gone into the next game. You all read the rules for the game and if we did put money from the other game into the next game we would have been breaking the rules.

I know if we didn’t follow the rules there would have been a large number of members that would have had a problem with that! So if you feel there should be money put into the next game from the last if the person that is the winner is not there you need to submit a request for a rule change, not a boycott. We also have lots of other drawings and games at the Post for your enjoyment, so please come in and support you Post Club.

BSA Troop 600 & Crew 600

During December, Troop 600 was a little more busy than usual. They held a overnight lock-in where the scouts planned their 2012 calendar of activities. A “Webelos Welcome Night” was held with a big turnout from Cub Scout Pack 1016, sponsored by Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church.

On Monday 19 December, the Troop held a Holiday Party, where there was some excellent eats and fellowship. Thanks to all of the parents who made the event a success. At the party Post 72 Comrade Hugh Long presented 4 scouts with their Rifle Shooting Merit Badge. Mr. Long is continuing his support of the Troop by instructing some of the scouts on the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge.

At the Post 72 Christmas Party on Saturday 17 December, the Troop’s Senior Patrol Leader, Warren N. and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, Nick K. presented the Post with a holiday gift of two large Poinsettias as a thank you for the fantastic support from the Post this year.

The Troop is proud to announce that Eagle Scout Candidate Warren N. successfully completed his Eagle Scout Service Project and his Eagle Board of Review, and as soon as National signs off, will officially be our newest Eagle Scout! Congratulations Warren!!

This past week, the Troop went on its annual holiday ski trip to Timberline Ski Lodge, WV, where 12 scouts successfully completed their Snow Sports Merit Badge.

Upcoming Scouting Events:
The Piedmont District “Freeze-o-ree” will be January 27-29, 2012, and is focused on Emergency Preparedness and will be held at Lenn Park near Brandy Station.
Summer Camp: Consideration of possible sites are Goshen, Sethmack or Tuckahoe. No dates set as yet, but likely to be the same as Sea Base event.
“Summit Shakedown” event at the new Scout Reservation in West Virginia, (July 12 - 17) has 15 Scouts signed up from Troop 600.

The Troop meets Monday nights, 1915 - 2030 hrs, upstairs at the Post. The Crew meets the 2nd Sunday each month, in the Auxiliary Building at 1500hrs.

Come “Feel the Thunder at Troop 600”.

American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program (ALJSSP)

Post 72 Junior Shooting Sports Program: The Post 72 now has two 4 person teams ready to compete in several upcoming shooting events. The teams have fired a “30 Prone” Postal competition which was open to youth shooting clubs in the State. The Post 72 in-house results were 1st place: Blake L. with 239/300, 2nd place: Sean H. with 238/300 and third place: Max H. with 234/300. As you can see, the competition is really close. Congratulations to all the shooters for some pretty good shooting.

The State wide 30 Prone Competition results should be out at the end January.

On 5 January, the Post 72 teams will be competing in the American Legion National Jr. Shooting Sports Program Qualifications. Each shooter will fire 20 pellets prone, 20 standing and 20 kneeling. The results will be computed at AL National with results being posted mid March.

We would like to welcome our newest team member Jake S. It looks like Jake has got some excellent potential.

We are looking for some good ideas for fund raisers this year, so if you have any good suggestions, please pass them on to Team Coordinators Claude Davenport () or Mike Freeman ().

The Post 72 Junior Shooting Sport team meets upstairs on Thursdays from 1830 - 2030hrs

We hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and will have a wonderful New Year. We don’t have much going on in January.

We know how you all love our bake sales! Don’t forget that we do have pretty much each week our Great filled Baskets or baked goods to chance off behind the bar.

As always we want to thank all our volunteers that help out around the Social Quarters and outside to keep this place looking good!

Our next meeting will be January 8th at 2:30 so come and join us.

We say many thanks to “Jewels” Cale and Joe for all the help putting on our December 18th Breakfast.

We had our holiday gift card giveaway to Giant Food, our $100 winner was Susan Vandevemder, and our $200 winner was Melissa Chaney.

Join us for our breakfast on January 15, Cale will be cooking up something “New,” made to order wraps with different fillings from mild to spicy!

It will give us time to compare Christmas stories. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

American Legion Riders News:

ALR Facebook Page — You will be asked to log into Facebook.

I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I hope y’all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas shared family and friends. 2012 promises to be a busy and thoroughly enjoyable year for all of us.

Plans for The Chili Challenge are well underway! Now we need to promote it to all Northern Virginia ALR Chapters! It should be lots of fun with our ALR friends, both old and new! Save the date: March 24th!

Our Patriotic Thank You Card Project is moving along nicely - invitations have been sent out to all Fauquier County Schools! We've had 4 elementary schools respond positively thus far and Fauquier HS is on-board again this year. We’re looking into locating some other recipients for these great cards! If you have any local contacts, please let me know. We’re also exploring the new military/community hospital at Ft. Belvoir, to see if they’ll permit us to share some of the cards with their patients.

The Warrenton Christmas Parade was lots of fun. Deb, Greg, Wally, Claude, Dave & Julie, Terrie, Richard & the boys all took part! The weather was great! The crowds seemed to enjoy seeing us, and we had a blast waving to everyone along the route. We have to do this again next year!

We had a good turn-out for the Wreaths across America event at the Culpeper National Cemetery. Claude, Mike, Dave, Julie, Terrie, Richard Justin, Dylan, Deb and I went to lend our hands. Lots of other volunteers turned out from the surrounding area to lend assistance to the Blue Knights with this undertaking! Things went very smoothly - lots of hands made light work. If you couldn’t make it this time, perhaps we can persuade you to join us next year!

Happy New Year Fun Facts
  • Did you know that New Year’s Day has been celebrated for thousands of years? True. It’s the oldest holiday celebrated today. And it wasn’t always celebrated on January 1.
  • According to folklore, the first visitor you see on New Year’s Day can bring either good or bad luck for the rest of the year. And tall, dark–haired men are considered to bring the best luck. Hmm… Pierce Bronson, come to my house! (Sorry Cliff!)
  • People traditionally thought that what they did or ate on New Year’s Day would affect the rest of the year.
  • The Dutch believe eating donuts on New Year’s Day will bring you good luck. Any food with a ring-shape is actually considered good luck.
  • Many parts of the US eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck throughout the year.
  • Ham and cabbage are also eaten on New Year’s since both symbolize prosperity.
